Fonte delle Monache
Here the nuns came to do the laundry without being seen

The garden of the Fonte delle Monache (Fountain of the Nuns) of San Paolo is accessed from Via delle Sperandie 47.

The name comes from one of the two convents that are, one after the other, in this street and the nuns used it to wash clothes without being seen. In fact, the fountain and it is so hidden that many Sienese have never been there.

The Fonte is supplied by a bottino, which is an underground aqueduct that collects local waters.

It is composed of a single large room in the form of a parallelepiped of approximately seven meters in length and five in width, with a height of about seven and a half meters and takes light from a small window placed at the top of the vault.
